We are beginning the process of looking for and gathering evidence. One of the things that we would like to do is complete several Character Assessments for the Parish. We have a diverse Parish, with many historical and environmental features that we may want to maintain, protect or enhance. Using the Oxford City Council Toolkit, and with help from Historic England, our first job will be to audit what we currently have. This will help us establish the significance and relative importance of physical aspects of the Parish and will form part of the evidence base for any policies that we develop later on. The Character Assessment is a short 2/3 page report with photographs and will be a key document to help us later down the line.
To help us get started, Dr Kathryn Davies, an experienced heritage planning consultant and local resident, has offered to help by running a short session for us. This will be an informal session, with an added incentive of wine and nibbles, where we will:-
• start to understand the historic environment of Cumnor, using photos and maps to bring the idea of historic significance to life
• explore the maps of Cumnor Parish in small groups to see how the Parish has evolved over time.
• use the Character Assessment Toolkit to identify what to look for and how to record data and features
After this session, working individually or in small groups, we will each take a different area and complete our initial assessments. Our hope is that families and small groups of local residents will help us with the detective work. It will be fun and informative! The window for doing this will be quite flexible, and will run over several weeks. The only skill you will need for this is to have an interest in your local area.
The session will run on
Monday 20th March at 7:30pm - 9pm at the Old School, Cumnor.
